Capoeira is a dynamic art form that developed through shared cultural customs, rituals, and fighting techniques. Slaves used capoeira to fight to escape and resist capture, but concealed its combative purpose through music, song, and dance. Capoeira today is a means of empowerment and a forum for social and cultural exchange. It has evolved to be an internationally respected art of grace and strength that combines ritual, self-defense, acrobatics, and music in a rhythmic dialogue of the body, mind, and spirit.

Maculelê & Jongo with Mestranda Márcia Cigarra & Professores Maestrinha and Perninha:
Sunday, May 14th
3:30-5:30pm (All Levels)
Open to the public. Please wear white.
Tickets: $20
Jongo is a dance with footwork that originally represented slaves planting seeds with their feet. Jongo is considered to be the father of samba and its rhythms have influenced the formation of popular Brazilian music. Therefore the jongo is one of the many contributions of Africans to the culture of Brazil. The tradition of jongo is carried on through family lineage, and different families have established particular regional identities for their respective jongo styles.

Maculelê is a traditional folk dance that was created on sugar cane plantations. The dance is practiced with sticks or machetes and the rhythmic movements imitate the chopping of sugar cane.

Please reserve your space in workshops by emailing info@abada.org or calling 415-206-0650 before Monday, May 8th.
