The world premiere of a new suite of music titled The Maiz Project by Guillermo Galindo (Mexico), commissioned by EARPLAY/Meet the Composer, in the Earplay’s new home, Herbst Theatre. The Maiz is an instrument of Galindo’s own creation from discarded technology artifacts such as computer parts, and played by the composer himself with the Earplay chamber members. “Driven by deep tradition coupled with a striking 21st century technical aesthetic, Guillermo's music is both primitive and fantastical.” comments Mary Chun, the conductor of the large ensemble work of EARPLAY. Galindo visualizes Post-colonial Discontinuum combining contemporary technology and music techniques with elements of Mesoamerican spirituality and fragments of Mexican folkloric and traditional music. The composer will create an environment in which the technical mastery of EARPLAY’s musicians, Earplayers, will complement—and oppose—the sonic world of Maiz. The Earplayers is a group of six outstanding Bay Area musicians: Tod Brody, flute and piccolo; Peter Josheff, clarinet and bass clarinet; Terrie Baune, violin; Ellen Ruth Rose, viola; Thalia Moore, cello, and Karen Rosenak, piano, conducted by Mary Chun. For May, exceptional Bay Area artists join them: Lisa Weiss, violin; Dan Reiter, cello; Eric Zivian, piano; and Christopher Froh, percussion.
