San Francisco-based Earplay Ensemble joins the Festival for an evening of 20th century and contemporary chamber music from diverse musical and cultural traditions. The centerpiece of the program is the Suite from Dancing with Shadows, composed by Jamaican Eleanor Alberga in 1991. The evening also includes Cincos Transfiguraciones Llanas by Mirtru Escalona-Mijares, L:aurie Radford’s Portals/Portails, Sunji Hong’s Impetuoso from 2006, and the 1949 Trio by Galina Ustvol’skaya. Founded in 1985, Earplay is an association of composers and performers dedicated to promoting new chamber music. Earplay’s repetoire embraces more than 230 different contemporary composers, including commissioned works and World and United States premieres.

“We fell in love with Dancing with Shadows the first time we heard it, and we are big fans of Eleanor Alberga to start with, said Mary Chun, conductor with Earplay Ensemble. “It is exciting for us to be able to explore this wonderful music in the context both of the other great composers on the program and the music from the Festival as a whole.”

For more than two decades, Earplay's passionate group of performers and composers has been dedicated to creating new chamber music, nurturing both emerging and well-known composers, and seeking out exciting new works. Earplay's music is lyrical and ferocious, modern and Romantic, finely honed and accessible. Support Earplay's 22nd season to hear new music. This year Earplay includes masters of the 20th century as well as world premieres.

Earplay was founded in 1985 by a consortium of composers and performers. Each year, Earplay presents live concerts of challenging music by contemporary composers, including works commissioned specially for Earplay. Commissioning projects have been a cornerstone of Earplay’s history, and Earplay sponsors an annual competition for new compositions. Earplay concerts include pre-concert presentations with composers and discussions of their works to increase audience involvement. Earplay presents superb performances of new works to assist composers in their craft and provides recordings of performances for archival purposes. Earplay is committed to supporting the artistic development of composers, performers and audiences.
