The Keiskamma Altarpiece is a monumental (13’x 22’) artwork created by women in South Africa’s largely rural, poverty-stricken Eastern Cape Province and exhibited in San Francisco at Grace Cathedral. The Altarpiece conveys a message of hope for people who are contending with the devastation that AIDS has wrought in their lives in the midst of poverty and other hardships.

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in collaboration with the African American Arts and Culture Complex (AAACC), The Women’s Building, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery and PhotoAlliance will present for the first time in the United States Lens on Life: From Bamako to San Francisco.

Lens on Life: From Bamako to San Francisco grew out of the biannual photography festival Bamako: African Encounters of Photography hosted by the city of Bamako, Mali since 1994 and supported by Cultures France. The exhibition is comprised of photographs taken all over the African continent and displayed throughout the city of Bamako in different types of venues, including museums, galleries, community centers, etc.
