Mary Wigman, Oskar Schlemmer, Dore Hoyer, Kurt Jooss, Pina Bausch and Sasha Waltz
Films at the Goethe-Institut, 530 Bush Street
In conjunction with SFIAF's 2009 presentation of German choreographer Sasha Waltz's Travelogue 1, the Goethe-Institut will show a series of films depicting the roots of German Dance Theatre. Starting with Mary Wigman, the mother of Ausdruckstanz, and continuing with her pupils Dore Hoyer and Kurt Jooss, the program will conclude with Germany's most renown dance theatre choreographers Pina Bausch and Sasha Waltz.

MARY WIGMAN - Mein Leben ist Tanz/My Life is Dance 1993, 29 min. Written and directed by Ulrich Tegeder, produced by Inter Nationes This portrait of the great German expressionist dancer Mary Wigman (1886-1973) includes historical footage of the early Laban School and Wigman's own compositions Witch Dance, Seraphic Song, Dance of Sommer, Farewell and Thanksgiving, and more.
DORE HOYER DANCES 1963, 22min. Directed by Rudolf Küfner, produced by Hessischer Rundfunk & Inter Nationes One of the last disciples of Wigman, Dore Hoyer (1911-1967), is here seen in a rare recorded performance of five expressionist dances.

DAS TRIADISCHE BALLETT /TRIADIC BALLET
Choreography by Oskar Schlemmer, 1922, 30 min.

While Mary Wigman experimented with movement as expression of emotions, Oskar Schlemmer created dance as the relation between the moving body and abstract space. Schlemmer's dance of pure geometric forms, masks and robot-like movements seems to envision the age of technology with humans as automats void of emotions.
THE CHOREOGRAPHER KURT JOOSS 1993, 40 min. Produced by Inter Nationes A student of Laban, Kurt Jooss (1901-79) created in his work a synthesis of classical ballet and modern dance. Co-founder of the Folkwang School in Essen he left Nazi-Germany in 1933 and returned after the war to continue his work as a choreographer, dancer and teacher whose most famous student became Pina Bausch. The film includes excerpts of his master piece, The Green Table, and other dances.

An insightful portrait by Pina Bausch's long-time friend Lee Yanor the film tries to communicate the feeling of infinity expressed through the body and the ritual of dance.
THE SEARCH FOR DANCE - PINA BAUSCH'S THEATRE WITH A DIFFERENCE 1994, 28 min. Produced by Inter Nationes When Pina Bausch took over the Wuppertal Dance Company in 1973 she was virtually unknown. Twenty years later her company had achieved world fame with more than fifty tours to twenty foreign countries. The focus of the film is on those first twenty years. CAFE MÜLLER, Choreography Pina Bausch, Wuppertaler Tanztheater (1978, 49 min.) This recording of one of Bausch's early master pieces includes the choreographer as one of the dancers. Excerpts of CAFÉ MÜLLER are featured in Pedro Almodovar's film TALK TO HER.

KÖRPER / CORPSE by Sasha Waltz

Performed in Montreal and Ottawa this spring, KÖRPER, was Waltz's opening act as new director of Berlin's Schaubühne in January 2000. It deals with the inner human body and the outer shell - its beauty and its ugliness, its mortality and the dream of the perfect body. The thirteen dancers generate an extraordinarily rich assortment of movement. The anatomy examined finds its analogue in the geometry of the performance.
