The final performance of the 2010 Festival is a landmark collaborative project between im'ij-re artistic director, choreographer Amy Seiwert and Freider Weiss of Nuremburg the author of EyeCon and Kalypso, video motion sensing programs especially designed for use with dance, music and computer art. White Noise focuses on the human urge to polarize versus unify. The phrase, "I'm right, you're wrong" paints a black and white worldview caught in duality, where ideas are clung to and value systems point out differences rather than connections. Just as all sound can be canceled out with the presence of white noise, a question will arise as to whether the serene state is transcendent or dismissive.

White Noise

An exciting and groundbreaking work for im'ij-re, White Noise marks the company's first exploration of interactive media by collaborating with internationally acclaimed German media artist Frieder Weiss. Intrigued by the intersections possible yet not often examined between ballet and the rapidly changing technologies of our times, im'ij-re will again offer the opportunity to redefine preconceptions of what ballet is and can be. Featuring a collaborative team of choreographer Amy Seiwert (Choreographer in Residence, Smuin Ballet, "25 to Watch" Dance Magazine), visual designer Marc Morozumi (Headlands Center for the Arts Artist in Residence Alumni and former dancer with Joe Goode) and Mr. Weiss, the team will spend time both in Berlin and San Francisco exploring this new collaborative partnership.

Conceived by Seiwert and Morozumi at an Alumni Return Residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in October of 2008, White Noise will focus on the human urge to polarize versus unify. The phrase, "I'm right, you're wrong" paints a black and white worldview caught in duality, where ideas are clung to and value systems point out differences rather than connections. For White Noise, the subject matter of inclusion and empathy will be addressed through a multi-disciplinary performance, thematically progressing from a state of rage and confusion, transforming into a zone of serenity. Just as all sound can be canceled out with the presence of white noise, a question will arise as to whether the serene state is transcendent or dismissive. Moving through intense duets and solos with complex interactive video into a clear space of calming ensemble work, the desire for human connection will override the question.

im'ij-re

im'ij-re's mission is simple - a contemporary ballet company in San Francisco, the company holds the belief that ballet has an expressive and vital voice relevant for our current time. Though respect is held for swans and sylphs, they are not where the company's interests lie. Having no desire to regurgitate art, im'ij-re's artists share the belief that through collaboration and experimentation, vibrant and courageous ideas can be expressed. Habitual reactions are discouraged.

Funding Credits

White Noise has been funded in part by the San Francisco Arts Commission, the San Francisco Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
