One day, when I was crossing customs, in the form field "Occupation" I wrote "Harlequin." The customs officer asked me what it meant. I answered: "this is what I have been doing for many years in the theatre."

"You should write 'Actor,'" he said. I apologized. He smiled. Going away from his desk I could feel his glare on my back. And I suddenly realized that I was walking differently. Lighter, snappier . . . as if I was 300 years younger.

DEREVO

DEREVO (Russian for "tree") was founded in 1988 by Anton Adasinskiy. His theatre life began in 1982 - first as an actor and soon after as director of his own pieces. By the beginning of 1988 Adasinskiy, already a well-known artist in Leningrad, saw himself at a turning point: he realized that his artistic activities to date could no longer satisfy him. Leaving his career behind he founded his own school, without a definite idea of what kind of artistic work he wanted to realize.

Fifty pupils applied to be in the school. Adasinskiy developed a seven-hour training day, which would increase the sensitivity of the participants. The main training subject is bodywork. By the end of the first year he chose four of his pupils: DEREVO was born. Three of the founding members are still members of the present ensemble.

DEREVO's first piece presented in public was named Red Zone and was performed in November 1988 in Leningrad.

Since its founding DEREVO has toured throughout Europe and overseas performing in more than 30 countries on three continents. The cast lived and worked in Prague, Amsterdam and Florence before they chose Dresden as their new working location in 1996. They have been based at Festspielhaus Hellerau Dresden since 2003. In August 1997 DEREVO received the Total Theatre Award for the "most innovative international production" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2006 the company won a Golden Mask Award for most innovative production with a piece titled Ketzal.

From the very beginning DEREVO refused to characterize the style of its work. The press creates definitions such as "silent theatre," "new dance," "Russian Butoh" and others. A common feature of all pieces is the fact that there is not a word uttered on stage.

DEREVO sometimes includes guest artists in some of their performances. Further projects are developed with pupils; DEREVO believes that there is no shortage of teachers in life but always a shortage of pupils. Therefore DEREVO takes every effort to learn whenever possible and to share its knowledge with others.
