A spirited troupe of flamencos hot on the trail of Don Quixote embark on a journey filled with colorful characters, dazzling footwork and silly sing alongs. Featuring a multi-talented and bilingual cast, this introduction to flamenco highlights the regional variety of flamenco and its power to encompass the range of human experience and emotion. Bay Area flamenco companies AguaClara Flamenco and San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company team up for this whimsical take on the passionate Spanish art form that will captivate children and adults alike.
Artists' BiosClara Rodriguez is the artistic director of AguaClara Flamenco and dancer, choreographer and musician based in Oakland, CA. A Southern CA native, she studied flamenco and classical Spanish dance while simultaneously training as a pianist, eventually earning a B.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA.She has performed at such esteemed venues as Jaipur Palace of India, the War Memorial Opera House, the tablaos of Granada, Spain and the Greek Theatre of Los Angeles.Rodriguez has been a soloist with the leading flamenco companies of California and has presented her own company at the Cowell Theater, the Ethnic Dance Festival, and the San Francisco International Arts Festival.
Kerensa DeMars is a San Francisco based dancer, choreographer, and instructor. Known for her unique synthesis of flamenco and middle eastern dance she has performed internationally at venues including London's Royal Festival Hall, the Teatro Calderón of Madrid, the Tivoli Theater in Barcelona and San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center. After completing a BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute she relocated to Madrid to pursue intensive flamenco studies. During her eight years abroad she studied with some of Spain’s foremost flamenco artists and toured as a featured dancer with Radio Tarifa. She is the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company.
Company HistoryAguaClara Flamenco is led by artistic director Clara Rodriguez and was formed in 2011 in Oakland, CA, featuring both local and international flamenco artists. The company has presented full-length works Somos Tierra and Diálogosat the Cowell Theatre, produced by the Azahar Dance Foundation. The company has presented two seasons in the San Francisco International Arts Festival, and in 2016 at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. AguaClara Flamenco has performed at Yoshi’s Oakland and holds a regular cycle at The Sound Room of Oakland. Educational outreach includes year-round dance classes, workshops, and hosting workshops featuring guest flamenco artists from the US and abroad.
San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company is a performance collective committed to preserving the cultural integrity of flamenco and supporting work that traverses traditional boundaries of the art form. Over the past few years, the SFFDC has emerged as a leading exponent of flamenco dance and music in the Bay Area. The SFFDC presents annual theatrical programs and a weekly performance series. SFFDC brings flamenco artists from Spain and encourages the development of local artists through workshops and performance opportunities. The company was founded by Artistic Director Kerensa DeMars, who trained intensively in Spain over eight years with the country’s foremost flamenco artists.
