Production Details

Galli revisits 'Cup of Tea', her 2015 piece, now bearing the body of a Mother coming back to the art scene. This live performance is meant to provoke a reflection about the systemic oppression of women. With a simple and repetitive act, she explores how gender stereotypes and political fictions projected over the female body generate symbolic violence, ultimately leading to the cultural misrepresentation of women as well as sexual and gender violence. It is still immensely difficult to see how in this system women could ever obtain true reproductive justice — meaning not just the right to abortion and birth control - but also to raise children in a society that sees caregiving and domestic work not only as labor, but as a collective responsibility that shapes the fabric of our society.

Audience members are invited to a reception with the artist following the performance on Saturday June 17.

Guta Galli is a Brazilian interdisciplinary artist working with performance, video, installation and photography. She holds a post-graduate degree in Photography (FAAP – São Paulo) and a MFA. (San Francisco Art Institute - SF). Her feminist researches study the intersections between gender, power, race and violence. Galli’s past years's researches used her personal experience as an expatriate artist to make a critical commentary on contemporary immigration politics. In her current works she investigates how neoliberalism and its radical freedom has impacted labor and the contemporary body. She has exhibited individually in Rotterdam (Brazil Rotterdam Festival / Netherlands), San Francisco, California (Black & White Projects Gallery) and São Paulo (AfroBrasil Museum, Matilha Cultural and Legislative Assembly of São Paulo), and has also participated in several art fairs and group exhibitions in São Paulo (SP-ARTE), Rio de Janeiro (RIO-ARTE), Brasília, Santiago, Rome (Biennale) and in the US, where she also had group and solo performances at the San Francisco Art Institute, SOMArts, SFMOMA, Contemporary Jewish Museum, De Young Museum (SF), BAMPFA (Berkeley), Berkeley Art Museum, Startup Art Fair (SF and LA), Shotwell Gallery (SF), Root Division (SF), Amos Enos Gallery (NY), The Reece Museum (Tenessee), The Collective (Denver), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago) and others.
