March 5, 2024 San Francisco: The San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) is thrilled to announce the return of Melody of China, a renowned ensemble dedicated to promoting Chinese music and culture, to this year’s festival.

Melody of China is comprised of Yangqin Zhao, Gangqin Zhao, Shenshen Zhang, Xiofeng Zhang, Wanpeng Guo, and Xian Lu.

Melody of China will be performing “Deep Roots,” a colorful and exciting program spanning the various regions of China, performed by virtuoso musicians on traditional instruments. Featuring a mesmerizing blend of traditional and contemporary Chinese music, "Deep Roots" promises to take audiences on a cultural journey through the rich tapestry of China's musical heritage. From haunting melodies to rhythmic compositions, Melody of China's skilled musicians will showcase the depth and beauty of Chinese musical traditions. The program features guest artist Rachel Xu on cello and the San Francisco premiere of The Enchantment of Dance by composer Phil Young.

The concert will be held at the Community Music Center on Sunday, May 5th at 2:00 pm. This historic venue provides the perfect setting for an afternoon of enchanting music and cultural exploration.

About Melody of China:

Melody of China, a nonprofit ensemble based in San Francisco, is the premiere Chinese music ensemble in the United States. The organization was formed in 1993 by a group of enthusiastic professional musicians from some of the most prestigious music conservatories in China.Yangqin (Chinese Hammered Dulcimer) virtuoso Yangqin Zhao is Director of the Melody of China (MoC) ensemble. Serving an annual audience of more than 10,000, Melody of China performances have broken barriers in combining traditional Chinese music with contemporary works by influential composers such as Kui Dong, Gang Situ and Yuanlin Chen. Over the years, MoC has commissioned over 40 new works by 20 contemporary composers and has performed at numerous Bay Area public schools. The ensemble has a two-fold mission: to promote Chinese classical, folk and contemporary music, and to provide quality entertainment through the synergy between an ancient cultural tradition and youthful, multi-colored American culture.
