March 17, 2023: College of Liberal and Creative Arts at  San Francisco State University (SF State), in partnership with the San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) are pleased to announce the launch of a new presenting series at SF State titled LCA-LIVE that plans to host professional theatre, music and dance performances to for an audience of both students and the general public.

The inaugural engagement for the series will be the renowned World Hip-Hop Ensemble and Cultural Community Arts Collective (and SFSU Alumni) Audiopharmacy. The group was invited to be the opening event precisely because they combined a proud association with the campus with the powerful and spiritual message that their live performances convey. In addition to the live concert on Wednesday April 19 at 7:00pm, the engagement will include a screening of the documentary film, GroundWorks on Wednesday April 12 at 12:00pm that focuses on four Bay Area indigenous activists including Audiopharmacy vocalist and core member, Ras K'Dee.

Audiopharmacy represents the power of Love, Music, and Collective Liberation. Spawned from its roots in Hip Hop, Audiopharmacy creates timeless music and art beyond any one genre. The ensemble is made up of multi-cultural creatives with roots indigenous to Turtle Island (North America), Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, South America, India and Europe. Their unique sound is eclectic + avant-garde, yet rooted in the voice of the people and Mama Earth. By intricately fusing turntablism, live instrumentation, global musical styles, poetic lyricism, and indigenous prayers, Audiopharmacy elevates the meaning, sound, and purpose of Hip Hop.

Audiopharmacy are also US ambassadors having participated in the American Music Abroad program that saw the group tour to Morocco, Oman, Cyprus, Indonesia, New Zealand, Samoa and the Solomon Islands, as well as the Next Level Program in Tanzania.

One of the group's core members, jo love/speak cruz, said of the return to San Francisco State University, "The University had a profound effect on those of us who graduated from here. Personally, there are three important teachings I learned as a student from my SFSU Ethnic Studies Professor, Danilo Begonia, that shaped my life to have deeper meaning. The first teaching - "know history, know self. No history, no self'. The second, "leave a place better than when you first arrived". The third, "Be impeccable with your word". These three things prepared me to move through life rooted in who I am, to live in integrity and to always do my best. Collectively, I believe those of us who graduated from State, learned the power of the People, the Arts and activism to impact social change, ultimately, guiding our careers as cultural community artists. We are really grateful to give back to the SFSU community and LCA LIVE audience, and excited to share some of the stories and lessons from our journeys since graduation.

LCA Live is a multidisciplinary performing arts and lecture series housed in the College of Liberal and Creative Arts (LCA) at San Francisco State University (SF State) that supports the mission and values of the College and the University through the deliberate creation of a space for arts education and appreciation, intellectual stimulation, cultural exchange, student, faculty, and staff engagement and community outreach. Recognizing that the city of San Francisco and SF State are known worldwide as sites of innovation, creativity, diversity and activism, LCA Live exists to showcase and advance the unique features that make us exceptional. LCA Live values and works to support: a student-centered education; the principles of access, diversity and inclusion upon considering its performers and patrons; raising the visibility of emerging and under-resourced artists, makers, thinkers and scholars; and engendering inclusive practices and spaces that nourish the creative spirit of all who engage with LCA Live.

Founded in 2002, SFIAF celebrates the arts by bringing together a global community of artists and audiences and by presenting innovative projects that focus on increasing human awareness and understanding within and across cultures. The organization's core values are based on principles of cultural and economic equity and are dedicated to coordinating the shared resources of multiple organizations to reach mutually beneficial goals. In addition to working with larger institutions, we place a high priority on the participation of smaller, culturally diverse entities whose communities have been left out of the prevailing American narrative. Supporting relationships between such organizations and artists is a primary commitment of SFIAF.
