Precita Eyes Mural Tours

Precita Eyes tours are guided by working muralists who narrate the murals and answer questions about the process, different techniques, and the Mission neighborhood. For the Saturday Morning Special, Carmela Gaspar shares with attendees her love of the city and the people who lend their magic to it. This tour centers the community’s stories of resistance against oppressive systems, resilience, love, and creation against all odds.

Carmela Gaspar

Carmela is a first-generation Filipino American born and raised in San Francisco. She’s an abolitionist and multidisciplinary artist passionate about making art and healing accessible to historically underrepresented communities in the Bay Area. Carmela was a two-time Youth Speaks Poetry Slam Semi-Finalist. She starred as co-lead in Dianne Aquino Chui's play Gotta Love Them Immigrants! (Aug. 2021) and Jowy Curameng’s play LCR (Nov. 2020). Currently, she works one of her dream jobs as a mural guide with Precita Eyes Muralists. She is also working on a poetry book and accompanying sculpture series.

Precita Eyes

Precita Eyes Muralists Association, Inc. was established in 1977, founded by Susan Cervantes and Luis Cervantes with other artists in San Francisco's Mission District. As an inner-city non-profit community-based mural arts organization, Precita Eyes Muralists has played an integral role in the city's cultural heritage and arts education, to enrich and transform urban environments and educate communities locally and internationally about the process and the history of public community mural art, maintaining a deep commitment to collaborating with the various communities.
