Theatre Flamenco de San Francisco
Founded in 1966, Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco is one of the longest, continually running flamenco performance groups outside of Spain. The organization exists to support the cultural enrichment of the San Francisco Bay Area through the presentation and promotion of flamenco, an art form that sprang from an international and rich mix of cultural and ethnic influences that converged in southern Spain. For 58 years Theatre Flamenco has been producing richly imaginative and thematic shows in collaboration with local and international artists, offering classes with world famous flamenco artists to students of all ages and abilities, and maintaining strong ties to flamenco artists around the world.

Artist Biographies

Carola Zertuche (Artistic Director, Choreographer, Dancer)
Carola Zertuche is originally from Torreón, Mexico, and has been the artistic director of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco since its 50th anniversary in 2016. Renowned for her innovative approach to flamenco, she has cultivated collaborations with local and international artists, boosting the company's recognition globally.

Starting her dance career at Mexico City’s Tablao Meson de Triana, Zertuche studied under masters such as Manolo Vargas and Pilar Rioja. Later, she refined her skills in Spain with luminaries such as Ciro and Belen Maya, earning acclaim as a featured dancer with Los Tarantos.
 Zertuche has toured extensively, captivating audiences across Mexico, the United States, and the Middle East, with notable performances at venues such as the Joyce Theatre in New York and the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.

Her contributions to flamenco have earned her numerous nominations and awards, including recognition from the Isadora Duncan Awards. 

In 2017, she made her choreographic debut for the San Francisco Opera's production of La Traviata.
