Artist Biographies

Shawna Virago
Shawna Virago is one of America’s first openly transgender women to tour nationally, performing as her true self since the early nineties. She is a pioneer in the pre-millennial punk scene, and is celebrated for her firebrand fusion of punk and country and her striking lyrics. She's known as the fairy godmother of trans country artists. Her music is easily on par with the great country lyricists – Guy Clarke, Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams.

Secret Emchy Society
Secret Emchy Society is your one stop shop for inclusive queer punky-tonk music about gay cowboys, queer witches, and drinking songs we can all dance to. Their raw, honest, and authentic listening experience is a welcome middle finger to modern country, offering up a brand of smoke-filled honky-tonk that's as traditional as they come. Lead singer Cindy Emch, sometimes known as the 'First Lady of Queer Country' is known for her distinct voice and ability to blend Americana, California Country, Hellbilly, Goth, and Honky Tonk, spinning radically distinctive tales from her singular perspective.

Eddie and the Heartbeats
Ed Varga is Eddie and the Heartbeats. His songs are a journey through Varga’s life as a transgender man that are honest, vulnerable, sometimes melancholic and sometimes goofy and sometimes both. Eddie and the Heartbeats have been compared to Johnathan Richman, Magnetic Fields, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Beat Happening. During his live performances Varga also shares anecdotes of growing up trans in the 1970’s and 1980’s in a small Wisconsin town and other reflections on trans life. Varga founded both Homocore Minneapolis and Homo A Go Go. He is also a composer and sound designer for film and video games.

Churro Nomi
Churro Nomi (aka Eric Garcia) is equal parts devised theater artist, dance filmmaker, drag queen, and community organizer, with a penchant for queer maximalism. She is the Co-Artistic Director of Detour Dance, Co-Host of the monthly drag cabaret Clutch The Pearls, and is the Managing Director with Fresh Meat Productions and the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival.
